Norwich Sickle

The design of this sickle is based on an artifact discovered in Norwich in 1934. It is a gorgeous example of the style of “socketed” sickles that were popular in the British Isles in the Bronze Age .

We discovered the design while researching other Bronze Age sickles and immediately fell in love with the shape. We had to make our own version of it! The blade is sharpened on both sides and has a thick spine of bronze down the center. There is a hole near the back, likely for hanging the sickle from a belt or hook. A fascinating looping design decorates both sides.

The wooden handle of the original bronze sickle long since decomposed, but we can make some educated guesses about what it would have looked like based on other archaeological examples. We chose to make the handle out of a gorgeous piece of highly-figured North American maple. The choice of wood is perhaps not historically accurate, but it seemed perfect for the project and we couldn’t resist! The combination is beautiful, and the sickle has a wonderful weight and feel in your hand.

Total length is 12.5 inches. Blade length is about 4.5 inches.
