Yggdrasil is the world tree in ancient Norse mythology. This mythical ash tree supports the nine worlds on its massive trunk. This sword is a tribute to its mythological namesake. We designed the knotwork of the leather handle and scabbard in the “Urnes” style, which is typified by twisting branches and foliate leaves. Some scholars think the Urnes style of knotwork was originally meant to evoke the branches of the world tree itself. Follow the twisting branches down the length of the sheath, and you’ll find a raised leather image of Níðhöggr, the dragon who chews on the roots of Yggdrasil.
Yggdrasil is a total of 35″ long with a 28″ blade of 5160 carbon steel which has been hand ground, tempered and polished. The tang is wide and peened at the top of the pommel. All fittings are cast bronze. The sheath is a wooden core covered with molded lambskin leather dyed a rich green color with handmade bronze fittings. The wooden belt hanger is based on a historical Viking-Era style of hanger and carved into the shape of ash leaves.
All three of us here at Omega Artworks contributed to parts of Yggdrasil’s creation, and creating all the little details and references in its design was some of the most fun we’ve ever had working on a sword together. This sword is a showcase of our skills and a truly unique work of art.
All of our swords are one-of-a-kind creations. While we might make another sword with similar knotwork in the future, there will never be one like Yggdrasil.
