Austrian Rapier

Gary made this rapier for a client, based off of a specific historic rapier housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The gorgeous blue and gold plated rapier was made between 1650 and 1660 for the Archduke of Austria. We had to make some interesting compromises when replicating the rapier, because the original turquoise fittings were made from glass paste— a material we couldn’t replicate. Gary ended up sculpting each individual piece and casting them in resin, which very closely matches the weight and luminosity of the original material. The hilt was carefully sculpted and cast out of bronze, then gold plated.
